Class Description

In this class, students will learn the chemistry and technique to applying plant and various other natural dye material to fabric: both cellulose and animal fibers. We will discuss where to find plants, how to use them, and how to treat fabric in order to apply dyes. Students will learn about light and wash fastness and how to combat these main problems when dealing with natural dyes. We will also cover the methods in which to safely make and maintain an organic indigo vat. At the end of the class, each student will have a portfolio of various fabric/yarn samples and the knowledge to bring their natural dye practice into their own studio.
